This Week's Parent Prompts
May 13, 2026 - Are You For Real? - Week 3: The Impossible Test

This week, we discussed Jesus' words about the Law in the Sermon on the Mount:

Matthew 5:17-20

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

We talked about how all the rules included in the Law were impossible to follow perfectly, but that the Law's purpose was not that we could follow it perfectly. Instead, the Law has a different purpose - to expose our own sin and inability to live up to God's standard of holiness, and our need for a savior!

We talked about how the only way our righteousness can be perfect is if we take Christ's righteousness. When we put our faith in Christ, we receive his righteousness in place of our sin!

2 Corinthians 5:20

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Questions to ask your student this week:

  • What purpose do the rules we have in our house serve?
  • Which commands of Jesus do you find the hardest to follow or live out?
  • How can I help you live the way Jesus wants us to?
